Includes many items relating to Walter Reed and medical affairs during the Spanish-American War, in which Kean was deputy chief surgeon and superintendant of the Dept. of Charities in Cuba 1898-1902. Later items related to Kean's career as assistant to the U. S. Surgeon General, in work with the Red Cross, and as deputy chief surgeon of A. E. F. during European War. A number of printed items, including Kean's Yellow fever, a compilation of various publications, and an 1890 copy of Dante's Comedy formerly belonging to Reed.

Born in Gloucester County, Va., Walter Reed received an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1869 and another M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1871.
