Born in Gloucester County, Va., Walter Reed received an M.D. from the University of Virginia in 1869 and another M.D. from Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1871. He joined the Army Medical Corps in 1876. William Crawford Gorgas, an authority in the control of yellow fever, worked as sanitation expert in the preparation and construction of the Panama Canal.
