Papers of Edwin Webster Culver [manuscript], 1850-1854.

Letters written by Edwin Webster Culver from California to his wife, Margaret Culver in Wayne County, Indiana, describe gold prospecting, quartz mining, and other events of the Gold Rush. He mentions the hardships of the journey to California through Mexico, a cholera epidemic, life in the diggings, health and homesickness, an Indian attack, illness and a voyage to the Sandwich Islands in search of health, carpentry work, the building of a flume, the South Fork Canal Company, and plans to close business and come home. One of the letters is written in a Gregory's Express Pocket Letter Book, An 1854 letter from M. B. Hudson to Mrs. Culver explains that he does not know her husband's whereabouts. A genealogy of the Culver family of New England is included. The collection also contains an article from the Richmond Times Dispatch, 1949, transcribing the gold rush journal of Alexander B. Heiskell, with a letter to the editor criticizing John Dos Passos on the verso, together with an [1849?] clipping describing the arrival of H. B. Williams at an unidentified city with samples of gold from California.
