Davis writes 1878 June 4 and August 21, 1880 March 28 and April 13, explaining that he is writing his memoirs, requesting information concerning Stringfellow's activities as a scout, during the Civil War, and praising his courage in the field as related to him by Robert E. Lee. He replies to Stringfellow's suggestion that he should have taken the field himself, stating that he had contemplated doing so after Johnston's retreat from Yorktown but was prevented from doing so by "duties of the Executive office...vagaries on military matters of the Vice President and the lethargy and timidity of the President of the Senate." He also notes that the "failure of our righteous cause rendered doubtful the government of the world by an overrulling providence." An obituary of Stringfellow is included.
