James Madison (1751-1836) was the fourth president of the United States, born in Port Conway, Virginia. He was a member of the Virginia legislature from 1776 to 1780 and from 1784 to 1786, and the Continental Congress from 1780 to 1783. Author and naval officer. A close friend of Washington Irving, Paulding collaborated with him to produce the satirical periodical, Salmagundi. He also wrote poetry, fiction, and a popular biography of George Washington. President Martin Van Buren appointed Paulding Secretary of the Navy in 1839, in which post he served until 1841.
