Papers of the Staples and related Persinger family, 1783-1937, (bulk 1853-1914).

Collection consists of correspondence, legal, and financial papers of the Persinger and Staples families. In a series of letters, 1879-1897, Daniel DeJarnette Staples writes to Mary Waugh Staples regarding their 1880 wedding, the purchase of their home, and travels he has taken with his invalid uncle, Waller R. Staples. In a series of letters, 1893-1896, David W. Persinger writes to his mother Mrs. M.E. Martin, Roanoke, Va., of his studies at Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal, Va., and the University of Virginia. He mentions Charles S. Venable's retirement and a silver cup given to the professor by his math class. The collection also contains family photographs, contracts, deeds, and insurance policies of Daniel and Mary Staples; the 1897 will of Waller R. Staples; an autobiography of Samuel G. Staples, 1879; a scrap-book of theatrical broadsides and memorabilia; a list, n.d., of the slaves of Samuel G. Staples; and several daybooks including one kept by Samuel G. and Waller R. Staples as executors of the estate of Abram Penn Staples.
