Papers of Hawthorne Daniel [manuscript], 1945-1964.

Daniel's papers contain manuscripts and some proofs of "Admiral Oldendorf's story," "Adventures of Francisco Vasquez de Coronado," "Fast freight to Teheran," "Ferdinand Magellan," "For want of a nail, the influence of logistics on war," and "The ordeal of the captive nations." There are also letters, 1945, to his wife Nelle M. Ryan Daniel written from the South Pacific, Australia, India, Egypt, Italy, and Germany where Daniel was writing the book on Oldendorf and researching "For want of a nail..." In the letters are descriptions of his travels, war devastated cities, and of people he interviewed, chiefly in connection with "For want of a nail...," including Jesse B. Oldendorf, Chester Nimitz, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Mark Clark, Patrick Hurley, Lord Archibald Wavell, Lord Louis Mountbatten, Sir Claude Auchinleck, and Pope Pius XII. Additional letters to his wife, 1955, describe his work on the memoirs of Harry Truman. Bernice Baumgarten is a correspondent.
