Trans World Airlines, formerly Transcontinental & Western Air, was founded in 1930 by a merger of Pittsburgh Aviation Industries, Western Express, and T.A.T.- Maddox Airlines (founded in 1929 by Charles Lindbergh). In 1956 and 1957, U.S. Emergency Board No. 116 heard a dispute between carriers represented by the Eastern, Western, and Southeastern Carriers' Conference Committees and employees represented by the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
