Poppenheim family legal papers, 1854-1876.

Legal documents and correspondence pertaining to a lawsuit, and other legal and business affairs of John F. Poppenheim and other members of the Poppenheim family. Also contains papers regarding war depredations, including a statement (ca. 1865-1866) regarding "Property taken from Dr. John F. Poppenheim's farm on Goose Creek on the 23rd Feb. 1865 by part of United States troops under command of Genl. Potter." The statement lists livestock, crops, and other items taken, and makes claim for monetary reimbursement for "injury and destruction of house." Poppenheim attests that "Gen. Potter gave me a passport to Charleston and gave me assurance that the farm should be protected as a loyal citizen; when I returned to the farm it was stripped of everything of consequence." Another group of documents (1856-1863) consists of several letters of James S. Drayton to Dr. John F. Poppenheim concerning the hire of a slave named Julia.
