General description of the collection: The Walter V. Lawrence papers contain correspondence that he received while a prisoner, and later correspondence with and about former crew members, a compilation of poems and sayings that he created while in prison, a booklet titled American Ex-Prisoners of War, the European Story, Packet No. 8, a 2002 Prisoner of War Engagement calendar, and a program for the B-24 50th Anniversary Reunion 1989, in Fort Worth, Texas, including a poster and several articles. The original correspondence is from Lawrence's mother. She talks about how dry it is and what is going on at home. Later correspondence is a photocopied letter from a German man who was a 16 year old Flak gunner near when he was shot down. The man, Friedrich J. Konacke remembers seeing the crash that involved Lawrence's bomber and another plane.

Staff Sergeant Walter V. Lawrence was part of a B-24 bomber crew with the 44th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He was shot down near Magdeburg, Germany, 29 June 1944, and taken prisoner. He spent the remainder of the war in the Dulag Luft prison system at Stalag Luft IV and Stalag 357, near Fallingbostel, Germany. From the description of Walter V.
