Staff Sergeant Walter V. Lawrence was part of a B-24 bomber crew with the 44th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. He was shot down near Magdeburg, Germany, 29 June 1944, and taken prisoner. He spent the remainder of the war in the Dulag Luft prison system at Stalag Luft IV and Stalag 357, near Fallingbostel, Germany.
