Crafford letter to Orlando Brown, 28 January 1850-2 February 1850.

Single letter with entries from 28 January 1850 to 2 February 1850 signed by "Crafford" in Frankfort, Kentucky and addressed to Orlando Brown, Office of Indian Affairs, Washington, D.C. Crafford keeps Brown informed on local events in Frankfort, particularly speeches made on behalf of the new state constitution. He writes, "enemies to the constitution are increasing very fast, but still I believe it will be rec'd by the people." Crafford comments specifically on speeches made by Tom Marshall, Captain Heady, and Chilton Allen. He also discusses town gossip as well as the weather. The tone of the letter is very informal and often irreverant, indicating that Crafford and Brown were probably close friends.

Orlando Brown was born in 1801 to John and Margaretta Mason Brown. In 1833 he became the first editor of the Frankfort newspaper the Commonwealth. He was a member of the Whig party and became actively involved in state and national politics. In 1848, he was appointed to Commissioner of Indian Affairs in the Zachary Taylor administration.
