New York State Board of Mediation and Arbitration. Transcript and exhibits, 1899.

Transcript of hearing before the New York State Board of Mediation and Arbitration concerning Smith, Gray & Co., Brooklyn, New York and the employees of Smith, Gray & Co. represented by the Amalgamated Association of Clothing Cutters and Trimmers and Garment Workers of America. The Board began its investigation on February 27, 1899 as a result of an anonymous letter which it received. The company had discharged two foremen - one with twenty, the other with fifteen years' service - and hired a new man. Mr. McLaughlin immediately introduced price cuts and began treating the man in a very abusive manner with the results that the men walked out. Several other unions in New York boycotted the products of the company when it replaced the strikers with non-union men.
