This collection consists of some original correspondence of the Washington Territorial Governor Fayette McMullin. It consists of about 18 letters of incoming and outgoing correspondence pertaining to Territorial governmental matters. One letter of interest is written to Gov. McMullin from Wm. M. Morrow dated Jan. 11, 1858. Mr. Morrow was the Representative in the Territorial Legislature for Sawamish County in 1855. Mr. Morrow writes the Governor requesting that he not grant a reprieve to Chief Leschi for his involvement in the Wars in Washington Territory. The digitized version includes a list of the letters that have been digitized.

Francis A. Chenoweth was a lawyer and politician in the Pacific Northwest. He was born in Ohio and moved with his family to Wisconsin where he passed the Wisconsin bar at age 22. In 1849 he moved to the Oregon Territory. He settled in Cascade, OR where he operated a business portaging cargo and passengers across the Columbia River. In 1852 he was elected to the Oregon Territorial Legislature and was an advocate for creating a new territory on the northern side of the Columbia River....

Fayette McMullin was the second Washington Territorial Governor. He was a politician, coach driver, teamster, farmer, banker from Virginia and Washington State. Lafayette "Fayette" McMullin was born on May 18, 1805 in Bedford Co., VA. Fayette's father had established a successful wagon train and coach line from Bedford to Estillville (now Gate City), VA which transported passengers, mail and goods along the line.
