Correspondence to Morley Roberts, 1889-1903.

Aside from 1 postcard dated 1889, the items date from 1894 to 1903. A handwritten note by Morley Roberts on the first page of the transcripts indicates that additional letters Gissing wrote to him between 1880 and 1881, and at other points up to 1894, could not be found; in another note (transcript 15 January 1895), as he tries to reconstruct mentally the subject of the exchange, Roberts regrets that his own letters to Gissing apparently were not preserved. Gissing's letters to Roberts document their friendship; the topics they range across include news of his home-life and domestic difficulties, with mention of his wife and sons, his health, and his frame of mind; and his own works, especially concerning their critical and popular reception, and commercial aspects (including his extensive response to a review in the Spectator; 10 February 1895). There are mentions of W. H. Hudson; and of Gabrielle Fleury, with a passage quoted in French from one of her letters (6 February 1899). Included in the transcripts are 2 poems by Gissing, The humble aspiration of G. G., novelist, and Hope in vain, which were placed by Roberts at the end (folder 47). The latter poem is dated Hastings, 25 July 1883.
