Correspondence to W. H. Hudson, 1898.

Handwritten letter by George Gissing, dated from Rome in January 1898, to W. H. Hudson, accompanied by a typed transcript made by or at the direction of Morley Roberts. Speaking to Hudson as a friend, Gissing conveys general news of himself, including an interesting Calabrian journey; difficulties weighing on him; poor health; and the likelihood that he would not return to England until May. He had taken as occasion to write his curiosity about the veracity of a report he had seen in the Roman newspaper La Tribuna stating that Hudson had written a letter to the editor protesting the ill-treatment of horses in Rome. A quarter leaf of the original letter, below Gissing's signature, is wanting, without any apparent loss of text.

He eventually became disillusioned by the effect on the Pampas's ecosystem caused by large-scale immigration of bird-eating Italians.
