Frederick Schwatka. Explorer, born in Galena, Ill., where he later worked at printing. Attended Willamette University. Graduated from West Point, held army posts, while studying law and medicine. Became interested in exploration and convinced the American Geographical Society to back an attempt to discover the fate of the expedition of Sir John Franklin to the Arctic, thirty years earlier. This diary was kept by J.B. McIntosh while on the Southeast Alaska and Yukon River exploration expedition with Lieutenant Fredrick Schwatka. J.B. McIntosh was the only civilian in the U.S. Army exploring party. McIntosh was the party assayer. The Schwatka Exploration Expedition left from Portland, Oregon on the Steamer Victoria and traveled through Southeast on the Northwest Passage up the Yukon River in Interior Alaska.
