This diary was kept by J.B. McIntosh while on the Southeast Alaska and Yukon River exploration expedition with Lieutenant Fredrick Schwatka. J.B. McIntosh was the only civilian in the U.S. Army exploring party. McIntosh was the party assayer. The Schwatka Exploration Expedition left from Portland, Oregon on the Steamer Victoria and traveled through Southeast on the Northwest Passage up the Yukon River in Interior Alaska.
