Maria Sanford papers, 1869-1922.

The collection includes photoprint copies of a letter from a newspaper "To the school directors of Chester County" (Penna.) defending Sanford's right to be elected and commissioned as a county school superintendent (ca. 1869). Also included are letters fostering competition in rhetoric and debate, a printed copy of her last public address, "Apostrophe to the Flag", memorial tributes, including one given at a Daughters of the American Recolution meeting by Ina Firkins, and two volumes (on Leonardo da Vinci and Giotto) which are part of a collection Sanford bought and had bound for her students' use. Most were destroyed in the Old Main fire.
