Papers of William Martin, 1862-1933, (bulk 1885-1899)

This collection reflects portions of the life of Pittsburgh resident William Martin and his involvement in the labor movement of the late 19th century. The collection contains six series. Series I consists of materials related to labor union finances, affairs, and proceedings. This information includes the financial records of the International Rollers, Roughers, Catchers and Hookers of the United States and the National Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers, as well as correspondence, union meeting minutes, constitutions and by-laws, and decorative ribbons and medals used to commemorate union conventions and celebrations. Series II includes information related to Martin's tenure as Chief of the Bureau of Labor for the Carnegie Steel Company. This information includes wage scale payouts, correspondence, observations, business documents, and newspaper clippings regarding the Carnegie Steel Company and competitor mills and businesses. Series III includes information related to Martin's involvement with the McCullough and Martin Manufacturing Company and the Olive Varnish Company. This includes both financial records and Martin generated correspondence. Series IV contains materials related to Martin's efforts to secure a post within the Federal government. This includes information of Martin's 1889 bid for the office of Commissioner of Labor and Martin's 1897 effort to secure the office of Commissioner of Immigration at Ellis Island. Included are endorsements from Andrew Carnegie, United States Senators Mathew Quay and Boies Penrose, B.F. Jones, President of the American Iron and Steel Association, and Pittsburgh Mayor William McCallin. Series V contains materials related to inventions and patent acquisition. This includes correspondence, patent documentation, blueprints, and photographs. Series VI includes genealogical, family, and miscellaneous information.

Born January 7, 1845 in Caulderbank, Scotland, William Martin moved to Pittsburgh in 1870 and is largely remembered as an active and influential participant in the labor movement of the late 19th century. From 1878-1890 Mr. Martin served as Secretary Treasurer for the National Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers of the United States.
