Indian head pennies or cents were minted from 1859 to 1909. They were designed by James Barton Longacre. Buffalo nickels were minted from 1913 through 1938, they were designed by James Earle Fraser. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
