Papers of the Murphy and O'Bryan families, 1791-1970.

Early papers relate to Lewis O'Bryan, Sr. (1770-1849) and consist of land grants, deeds, plats, mortgages, and a 1791 land grant signed by William Moultrie, an 1809 deed with plat of Doctors Creek Methodist Meeting House, and undated town plan of Walterboro, S.C. Bulk of family correspondence consists of letters between Lewis O'Bryan, Jr. (1808-1860) and his children: Andrew Franklin O'Bryan, Laurens Burton O'Bryan, and Eliza Lewis O'Bryan, re grave stones and the family's legal and financial matters and other news. Other family correspondents include Franklin Marshall O'Bryan and Charlie B. O'Bryan. Undated genealogical notes provide further information about the family. Letter, 7 Feb. 1853, from A. P. Aldrich to Lew is O'Bryan, Jr., discusses secession and deems the scheme a failure; an 1853 prenuptial settlement signed by Margaret O'Bryan and Lewis M. Jones lists by name African American slaves which Margaret brought to the marriage; an 1858 sale of slaves in trust indicates their separation. Laurens Burton O'Bryan in Allendale, S.C., reports in a letter dated 27 June 1887 that the Allendale Base Ball club played Varnville club at Dr. Stoney's. Correspondence from family members who left S.C., include letters exchanged between A. Franklin O'Bryan in Texas and his son Franklin Marshall O'Bryan in Atlanta, Ga.; Laurie's son, Charlie B. O'Bryan, also resided in Texas by this period. Charlie and Franklin write to Eliza O'Bryan Murphy ("Aunt Leila") about the settlement of estate of Lewis and wife Eliza and disbursement to grandchildren. Other land papers include surveyor's notes for 43 properties and projects in Colleton County and surrounding areas, including an undated document [ca. 1920s?] recording boundary lines for Walterboro, S.C., compiled by William Perry Murphy Jr., son of Eliza Lewis O'Bryan Murphy and William Perry Murphy. Also present are 1961 survey and plans for Thomas Legare Hiers' house near Walterboro and a set of standard plans for Two Bedroom House Frame Construction from Clemson Extension/USDA #7187 (1970) with accompanying promotional literature.
