Son of John Gotfried Reese and Caroline Alrutz, was born in Weinenburg, Hanover, Feb. 6, 1791; was tailor's apprentice until 1813, when he joined cavalry regiment and fought until Waterloo. Became theological student in Rome. Was ordained, 1822, went to Africa, returned to Germany, 1524, and was called to America by Bishop Fenwick. Became first German priest in Northwest.
