William Macmath (1844-1922) was a scholar and collector of Scottish ballad text. He transcribed numerous Scottish ballad manuscripts and sent the copies to Harvard professor, Francis James Child. Child used these texts in his research for his English and Scottish Popular Ballads (1882-1898). After Child's death in 1898, Harvard professor George Lyman Kittredge continued the research. James Hogg was born in Ettrick, Selkshire, Scotland in November 1770. Having received little formal education, Hogg taught himself to read and write in his late teens. He continued to work as a labourer and shepherd for twenty five years. Between 1794-1810 Hogg wrote songs which appeared in magazines and in two small collections. John Bell was born in Newcastle on 7 October 1783, first son of John Bell (1755-1816), a land surveyor and bookseller, and Margaret, the daughter of John Gray of Combfield House, co. Durham.
