Thomas Frognall Dibdin was born in Calcutta, and orphaned at a young age; he was raised by relatives in England, and educated at Oxford. He trained to practice law, but took holy orders instead. Throughout his enigmatic and somewhat controversial life as an author, librarian, bibliographer, and bibliophile, Dibdin contributed significantly to revitalizing the popularity of books on England.
