Family letters, 1861-1869.

Consists of 107 letters from William Huntington to his family, chiefly to his sister Ellen. The bulk of the letters were written during the Civil War and detail Huntington's experiences with the 8th Connecticut Volunteers in service chiefly in Virginia. A few letters after the war were written from California where Huntington was in the lumber business.

William Huntington, Sr., was born on March 28, 1784, in New Grantham, New Hampshire. He lived in New Hampshire until 1805, when he married Zina Baker (1786-1839). The couple moved to Watertown, New York, in 1806. The War of 1812 left the family reduced almost to poverty, as a result of which William turned to religion for solace.
