William Huntington, Sr., was born on March 28, 1784, in New Grantham, New Hampshire. He lived in New Hampshire until 1805, when he married Zina Baker (1786-1839). The couple moved to Watertown, New York, in 1806. The War of 1812 left the family reduced almost to poverty, as a result of which William turned to religion for solace. After spending much of the 1820s investigating various churches, William and Zina were baptized into the newly founded Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1835, and in 1836 moved to Kirtland, Ohio, where William was a charter member of the Kirtland Safety Society. In 1838 the family left Ohio for Missouri, where Zina died on July 8, 1839. William lived for a time in Nauvoo, Illinois, before settling in Mt. Pisgah, Iowa, until his death on August 19, 1846.
