The Ballet West, originally known as the Utah Civic Ballet, was established as a professional Ballet company in 1963. The company was jointly founded by Mrs. John M. Wallace and William F. Christensen. Christensen served as Artistic Director of the Ballet West from its inception until he founded his own academy of dance.
