Toni Lander (Toni Pihl Petersen, 1940-1985) trained at the school of the Royal Danish Ballet in Copenhagen, after which she joined the Royal Danish Ballet. By 1950 she was a soloist and was featured in Etudes, choreographed by the ballet master Harald Lander, whom she married in 1950. She was guest ballerina in London (1951-1952), during the final season with the original Ballet Russes and ballerina with the London Festival Ballet (1954-1959). She danceed with the Paris Opéra and continued her training in Paris with Olga Preobrajenska and Lubov Egorova. She joined the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) in 1965 in New York. In 1966 she married Bruce Marks, principal dancer for the ABT and in 1971 returned to Denmark, where she again danced with the Royal Danish Ballet until 1976. When Marks was appointed artistic director of the Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah, they returned to the United States, where she taught and coached ballet.
