James J. Johnston Civil War diary, 1 January 1863 - 30 September 1863.

Original Civil War diary of James J. Johnston, a Methodist preacher from Henry County, Ky., and a chaplain in Co. S, 6th Kentucky Infantry. The diary begins 1 January 1863 during the battle of Stones River and ends shortly after the battle of Chickamauga on 30 September 1863. Daily entries detail troop movements, weather, Johnston's activities and health, and news of the war he obtained from reading various newspapers. Johnston frequently traveled home via Louisville to Pleasureville, Ky., and he describes in detail the people and places he visited. The final pages of the diary include Johnston's record of casualties and specific injuries sustained by soldiers in his regiment. The diary is in good condition, although a few pages written in pencil are barely legible.
