Letterpress copybook, 1865-1876.

This book contains letterpress onionskin copies of his outgoing correspondence, most written at Tarrytown and New York City, concerning his design and construction of the first elevated railroad in New York City. His other business ventures are considered as well, such as the railroad line to the upper peninsula of Michigan, and his investments in transportation on the Erie Canal and Great Lakes. Correspondents include prominent business and political figures of the time period: Andrew Carnegie, Erastus Corning, Reuben Fenton, and John Hoffman.

Charles Thompson Harvey (1829-1912) was a self trained engineer who was renown for designing and building the Sault Sainte Marie (Soo) Canal. Later, he became a pioneer in the development of the world's first elevated railroad line in New York City. This venture, known as the West Side and Yonkers Patent Railway was demonstrated in December 1867 and open for public transit use in July 1868.
