Charles Thompson Harvey (1829-1912) was a self trained engineer who was renown for designing and building the Sault Sainte Marie (Soo) Canal. Later, he became a pioneer in the development of the world's first elevated railroad line in New York City. This venture, known as the West Side and Yonkers Patent Railway was demonstrated in December 1867 and open for public transit use in July 1868. Attempts to expand the project were thwarted by a group of individuals known as the "Tracy Clique", who managed to acquire a majority share of the stock. Subsequently, Harvey spent nearly twenty-five years in litigation seeking compensation for his elevated railway scheme.
