Consists of papers reflective of both Willard and Margaret Thorp's careers as authors and critics, Willard's years as a professor of English at Princeton University, and Margaret's early career in journalism. Thorp's correspondence with the journalist Levering Cartwright is comprised of eighty letters and twelve note-cards dealing with a wide variety of subjects including events taking place at Princeton University, and about Princeton presidents, faculty, and staff. Thorp also writes about his and his wife's health; the appointment by the Trustees of Princeton University of Cartwright to the English Department's Advisory Council; the establishment of the Levering Cartwright '26 Fund for American Literature at the Princeton University Library; significant acquisitions at the Princeton University Library, and about books and authors. In a letter dated October 4, 1970, Thorp informs Cartwright of the death of his wife Margaret a few days earlier. Margaret's papers consist of drafts of CHARLES KINGSLEY, 1819-1875 and FEMALE PERSUASION: SIX STRONG-MINDED WOMEN, speeches, articles, notebooks, correspondence with Allen Tate and Caroline Gordon, Vivienne Heigh (Mrs. T.S. Eliot), family letters and correspondence with her publishers, and family sketchbooks and photographs.
