Abstract

The collection consists of financial and business records of the Detroit, Lansing and Northern, the Saginaw Valley and St. Louis, and the Pere Marquette railroads, the Chicago and West Michigan Railway, related Michigan railroads, and other related businesses that were generated or checked and housed by Howard. Types of records in the collection include: Account Books; Check Books; Ledgers; Cash Books (various types); Disbursements; Remittances; Drafts; Bills; Pay Rolls and boarding records (various types); Garnishees; Receipts; Deductions from Pay; Audits; Mortgage materials; Bond Coupons; Stock Certificates (various types), including those for street-railroads; Vouchers; Correspondence; Proxies; Meeting Minutes; Notices of Meetings; Agreements; some Indexes; Reorganization Receipts of the Detroit, Lansing and Northern System; miscellaneous station reports during World War I for the Pere Marquette Railroad, Collins Station; and other materials.

[James] J. E. Howard was the Assistant Treasurer and Paymaster of the Detroit, Lansing and Northern, the Saginaw Valley and St. Louis, and the Pere Marquette railroads, the Chicago and West Michigan Railway, and related railroads from at least 1889 through at least 1897, and Chief Clerk of the Pere Marquette Railroad beginning in 1900. On March 20, 1837, legislation providing for work to proceed on three railroads and two canals in Michigan became law. One of the railroads -- the central -- was to connect Detroit and St. Joseph through the second tier of counties. Based upon preliminary work already done by the Detroit and St. Joseph Railroad Company (whose rights and properties were purchased by the state), the railroad was able to begin operation (at least as far as Dearborn) by the end of 1837.
