Simpson, Robert MacDonald papers, 1940-1980.

Papers in the collection, 1940-1980, primarily document Robert Simpson's military service. Also included are two articles written by Simpson, "The Little Chief" appeared in the Saturday Evening Post (4 August 1945) and "Technique of Control in Close Terrain" appeared in The Marine Corps Gazette (May 1945). There are also photographs documenting Simpson's campaigns in the South Pacific, 1943, including a few taken by photojournalist, David Douglas Duncan and a photograph of Robert Simpson being awarded the Silver Star, undated. Also included are two undated photographs of Simpson with his fellow Norwich cadets.

Robert M. Simpson of Portsmouth, NH, graduated with the Norwich University class of 1929. During his years at Norwich, he was involved in baseball, football and the outing club. He was also a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. During World War II, Robert Simpson served as an infantry company commander (G Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Division) during the Guadalcanal and Bougainville campaigns in the Solomon Islands and was awarded both the Bronze and Silver Stars.
