Barnabas Lee papers, 1843-1844.

Three letters written to Lee from his Transylvania University classmates. Two 1843 letters are from Thomas H. Cummings. Cummings criticizes Charles Dickens' American Notes for General Circulation (1842), and states that Dickens is too harsh on American institutions and also needed to examine Great Britain's institutions for similar flaws. In a second letter to Lee, Cummings discusses his education prospects. He writes that he studied medicine, but doubted he would practice in the future. Another letter is written by G.B. Miller and discusses politics and Henry Clay. Miller writes that it must be intoxicating for someone, such as Henry Clay, to know that he might be elected President. Miller notes his support for Clay even though he is not a Whig. Miller also discusses marriage, friendship, school, and the prospect of aging.
