Eugene Hames was born on the Jorgenson Ranch near Phillipsburg, Mont. on July 24, 1920. His family later moved to Missoula, Mont. where he graduated from high school in 1937. Hames enlisted in the Army at Butte, Mont. on March 1, 1943 and volunteered for the ski troops. Rapidly promoted, he became a company First Sergeant.
