Anna Waynette Vandergriff was born on June 12, 1927. She grew up in Arlington, Texas, and attended Arlington schools. Upon graduation from Arlington High School, she attended North Texas Agricultural College, later transferring to Texas Christian University where she continued her studies in music. She left TCU when she married her childhood sweetheart Tom Vandergriff. They have been married for fifty-one years.
