Esther A. Hathaway diaries, 1897-1936.

The collection is made up of two years, 1897-1898, of daily diary entries, plus the year 1936. Much space is devoted to weather, family visits, foods eaten and cooked, and health problems. A very good picture is given of what life was like for a young art student, living away from home, studying in Boston. There are extensive comments about the quality of the classes, teachers, fellow students, and progress in her own artistic development. Almost nothing is written of life beyond her work and family, except bits on floods in New England and the occasional reference to world events such as the execution of the Lindberg baby's kidnapper, the Spanish Civil War, and Edward VIII's abdication address. There are also some cash account entries at the end of two of the diaries.
