Drawing created when the artist was a young student at the Cowles Art School in Boston, Mass. between 1897 and 1899. The sitter is unidentified although it is likely that she was a fellow student of Hathaway's. According to the donor, life portraits were done of class members after a student had successfully completed courses in drawing from plaster casts.

Drawing made by Hathaway when she was a young student at the Cowles Art School in Boston, Mass. in the late 1890s. Hathaway submitted this drawing for the Concours prize - a weekly competition held at the Cowles Art School. Although Hathaway's drawing was not awarded a prize or medal by the judges, her diary notes that her professor thought "my Concour drawing would have very good if I had kept my half tones subservient."

Esther Hathaway was born January 9, 1876, in Moretown, Vermont, the daughter of Asa Peck Hathaway and Alice Asenath Keeler. She lived in Montpelier and graduated from the Montpelier Seminary, where she took art classes on Saturday mornings from Miss Rood, a graduate of the Cowles Art School in Boston. Encouraged by Miss Rood, Esther enrolled at the Cowles School in 1897. She returned to Montpelier in 1899 and worked at the Department of Agriculture and at National Life Insurance Company. Esther died of pneumonia on December 24, 1936.
