Commonplace book, compiled by Porter, with autograph extracts about the history and topography of Persia, Southern Russia, etc., with translations from Herodotus, Pliny, from Hanway's account of his journey (1746), from Chardin, Xenophon, and others. Approximately 6 copies of carvings of reliefs and notes and tables of routes, distances, coinage, etc. There are short isolated entries concerning astronomy, Napoleonic logistics, European generals, a map of Africa, etc. 10 pages devoted to autograph extracts from Dr. Johnson's "Prayers and meditations," from Boswell's Life. Interspersed are quotations from Gibbon's "Decline and fall," and Wordworth's "Excursion," followed by "Methods of travelling in Persia," in 1802.
