Relyea family papers, 1839-1920.

Papers, 1839-1920, including legal documents, invoices, correspondence, invitations, and other miscellaneous documents. Much of the material relates to Peter Relyea, a New York City undertaker and resident of Williamsburg in Brookyn. There are also papers related to the Rosevelt family, who were related to the Relyeas. A few commissions from 1839 on relate to Peter Relyea's service with the New York State Militia. Some documents deal with real estate, including cemetery lots; in addition to mortgages, deeds, receipts for real estate taxes, etc., there is an 1844 contract for building a frame house in Williamsburg. There are receipts and accounts related to Peter Relyea's business as an undertaker, and an inventory of his estate. Some Masonic printed flyers commemorate his death, and there is also a printed musical program for a Masonic installation ceremony held in 1884. Material related to the Rosevelt family includes documents pertaining to Rosevelt and Sullivan, the contracting partnership of Warren Rosevelt and John M. Sullivan, including correspondence dated 1901-1902 dealing with their work constructing a pile dock at Governors Island. Other miscellaneous papers include a bill from T. Rosevelt and Griffths, shipwrights, dating form the 1840s, and codicils to the will of Lucy A. Buddington.
