Watts-Jones family papers, ca. 1800 - ca. 1905 (bulk 1800-1860).

Papers and correspondence, ca. 1800 - ca. 1905 (bulk 1800-1860), of the Watts and Floyd-Jones families. The people who figure most prominently are Charles Watts (d. ca. 1811), a cabinet-maker and merchant of Charleston; his son, Charles Watts, Jr., who was an attorney in New York City; and Henry Floyd-Jones, a New York merchant who was married to Helen Watts, daughter of the elder Charles Watts. Material related to the elder Charles Watts includes some letters written from Liverpool - he was involved in trade between Charleston, New York, and Britain - as well as papers relating to the settlement of his estate. Most of the collection consists of business-related material, but there are some personal letters to Charles Watts, Jr., and to his niece, Sarah Floyd-Jones, as well as a few to other members of the family. One group of papers deals with Charles Watts, Jr.'s interest in horse ferries on the Hudson River; another deals with Henry Floyd-Jones's duties in the 1st Division Infantry, New York State Militia, 1834-1849. Some accounts relate to Floyd-Jones's mercantile business, Jones and Bailey. Correspondents include Robert Walker, of Charleston and Princeton (N.J.), who frequently mentions New York and Charleston cabinetmakers; Moses Fisk; and Alexander Campbell. A few letters refer to the Charleston hurricane and tornado of 1811, and a letter from James S. Bailey discusses yellow fever in New York City in 1822. Other miscellaneous papers include printed ephemera, bills of exchange, postcards, and drawings of a steam engine and of a wood-splitting machine.
