Fred Lockley family papers, 1839-1958.

Papers, 1839-1958, consisting mainly of Fred Lockley's own correspondence, papers, and diaries, but including material related to other members of his family. There are numerous typescripts of articles Lockley wrote about interviews with elderly Oregon residents about conditions there in their youth; a folder of letters of thanks from recipients of copies of his book, "Oregon's Yesterdays"; and a few diaries and date books. There are a number of letters to Lockley from R.W.G. Vail, and large numbers from other correspondents, many related to his book dealership or to Oregon history. One letter, written by Edith M. James in November 1940, describes her response to the London Blitz. There are diaries of his wife, Laura Simpson Lockley, for 1933, and 1935-1939; she writes about domestic and family matters, with descriptions of vacations in California and elsewhere in the western United States. Some letters and diaries mention Lockley's son, Lawrence Campbell Lockley, and a few letters and papers relate to earlier generations of the family. There is a letter dated 1839 from Elizabeth Metcalf Campbell, Lockley's maternal grandmother, and one written by her mother, Margaret Metcalf. There are 18 letters written during 1860-1861 by Lockley's father, Frederick E. Lockley, to his future wife, Elizabeth Campbell, describing journeys between Troy and Schuylerville to visit her and ending with preparations for their wedding. There is also material related to Frederick E. Lockley's service with the 7th Regiment of the New York Volunteer Artillery during the Civil War, including a letter to him from George A. Treadwell. The collection includes some miscellaneous certificates, ephemera, etc., and a tintype of Fred Lockley at the age of 16, as well as an autograph album, 1880-1883, belonging to his sister, Maude Lockley, and a book of telegrams dated 1889, congratulating Nathan D. Simon and his wife on their marriage.
