New-York Hiberninan Volunteers, 1796 Jan.-Mar.

Minute book recording meetings of the short-lived New York Hibernian Volunteers (Jan.-Mar. 1796). This group of New Yorkers attempted to form a militia company composed of Irishmen or sons of Irishmen, but they disbanded after Governor John Jay forbade them to wear their uniform (green with shamrocks). Some of the officers of the company were Thomas T. Gaston, Robert Joyce, Robert Atkin, and James D. Webb.
