This collection primarily contains typewritten copies of correspondence among members of the Martin family. The original letters are at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. The collection also includes a typed transcript of a geneaology of Seneca Marcy, Lodema Martin Marcy's husband, which clarifies relationships in the Martin family.

Sylvester Martin and his wife, Laura, lived in Caton, New York. The Martin family included seven children: Lavina, Rhoda Lodema, Eliza, Mary Ann, Nathan, Joseph, and Ferdinand. Lavina (1828-1879) married Lewis Wood and lived on the family farm in Caton throughout her life. The rest of the family moved west, some settling in Iowa.
