The Salt Lake Collegiate Institute opened to students of all ages on April 12, 1875 in the basement of the First Presbyterian Church. Its first classes were taught by the Coyner family. Sheldon Jackson organized pioneer Presbyterian churches and schools in the West and Alaska. He recognized the importance of women's missionary work and helped to establish the Women's Executive Committee in 1878. In 1885, he was appointed as general agent for education in Alaska. The son of Jacob K. Reherd and Lucy Louise Ware, Herbert Ware Reherd was born on August 23, 1869 in Genesco, Illinois.
