Robert Goodloe Harper letters [microform] 1797-1823.

Robert Goodloe Harper was a successful lawyer and Federalist politician in Charleston, South Carolina and Baltimore, Maryland. He was chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and ran for Vice President in 1816 and 1820. He defended both Judge Pickering and Justice Chase during their impeachments, as well as Alexander Contee Hanson after the Federal Republican riots in 1812. He was as a militia commander at the Battle of North Point and played leading rolls in the Baltimore Exchange Co. and the Maryland State Colonization Society. His correspondents include William Sullivan, a Boston lawyer; James W. McCulloh, a Baltimore banker; Stephen Van Rensslaer, a New York Congressman; and Christopher Hughes, a U.S. diplomat.
