This collection mainly documents Clifton's large research projects and his reference collection. Also included is a small amount of biographical material on Clifton and his academic papers. The majority of the collection consists of copies of articles and drafts of articles; speeches; [complete or partial] books, maps, correspondence, contracts, curriculum vitaes, government documents; treaties, grant proposals and related materials, lists, notes, photographs, and other reference materials. Originals in the collection include some of Clifton's correspondence, notes, and note cards. The collection consists of letter- and legal-size papers, 5"x7" note cards, and oversized materials. The papers are divided into the following series: 1) Clifton Materials-Biographical and Academic Papers; 2) Bay Mills Indian Community Court Case Materials; 3) Canadian Potawatomi Research Materials; 4) Kan. Potawatomi Research Materials; 5) Keweenaw Bay Indian Community vs. the State of Mich. Court Case Materials; 6) Mich. Tuition Waver Project Materials; 7) [Native American] Removal Documents; 8) Reprints; 9) Saginaw Chippewa Tribe Court Case Materials; and 10) Wis. vs. Baker Court Case Materials. For an in-depth description of the series, see the finding aid. The collection largely documents the Potawatomi, Ottawa, and Ojibwe tribes, mainly in Mich. and Kan., but also in Wis. and Canada, as well as numerous other North American tribes. The federal removal of all of these tribes is documented in the collection, particularly in the note cards and in the reprints (or reference) series. Topics documented for Mich. tribes include: treaties; treaty rights; land tenure; government and politics; assimilation; culture; folklore; history; missions and missionaries; education; wars and captivity narratives; and other topics. A small number of items in the Reprints series document Africa, African politics and exploration, slaves, slavery, the indigenous peoples of Micronesia and Chile, and the Sami people of Norway, as well as general anthropology and ethnology topics. PLEASE NOTE: Boxes 4-5 are closed to researchers until 2045 due to the personal, medical, and financial information in them.
