Born in Statesboro, Georgia, on March 8, 1922, the son of Lt. Col. James Barney Averitt and Jessie Olliff Averitt, Jack Nelson Averitt received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1945 from Georgia Teachers College, his Master of Arts degree at the University of Georgia in 1946, and his Ph. D. at the University of North Carolina, Chapel hill, in 1957. He was married to Addie Dunnaway, daughter of John Morgan and Blanche Lewis Dunnaway on March 18, 1948.
